En Inglés: Reflecting on Mexico Upon the Start of First Day of the Rest of My Life

Life is full of ironies and connections. At this moment I am sitting on a plane about 10,000 feet above California. With my white shirt of the Mexico Futbol Association, I am traveling on a plane that will end in Puerto Vallarta, MX. Yet I’m not going to Puerto Vallarta this year, although at this time exactly one year ago I was traveling on a plane from Mexico City to Puerto Vallarta. I can remember the flight like it was yesterday.

2010 World Cup in Mexico
It was a Mexicana flight that left Mexico City at the same time that Argentina and Germany were playing in the quarterfinal of the 2010 World Cup. I went to DF to visit the city for the second time and also to watch the World Cup quarterfinals. The day before my flight, I saw two games in the Zócalo of Mexico City with thousands of people. In 2006, I went to Germany, Italy and Spain to visit European countries that have great passion for soccer. In 2010, I wanted to go to Mexico to feel the same. But I wasn’t able see Mexico play while I was in Mexico because they lost the round before the quarterfinal. Even if they would have been playing, I wouldn’t have been able to watch the game because they would have been playing during the time when I was flying to Puerto Vallarta. : (

During the flight a year ago, the pilots kept giving us the score of the match between Argentina and Germany. When the final score was announced, the passengers screamed cheerfully and passionately. Germany won 4-0 over Argentina. It was quite interesting because during my time in Mexico every time a Latin American country lost, all the people shouted with joy. It was strange to me. I guess after Mexico lost, they did not want any Latin American team to win.

Sharing a Love for Spanish
Also during the flight a year ago, I was sitting next a woman and her kids. They were flying to Puerto Vallarta to visit family and guess what? They were from Chicago. She grew up in Chicago and at that point was working as a nurse. I could hear part of her conversation with their kids in “Spanglish” and, so as I always try to do, I started talking to her in Spanish. We had a good conversation about Chicago, Mexico, and even music. For a short time, I shared my iPhone with her and her daughter because the two were interested in the fact that I like listening to many Latin artists in Spanish, such as J. Lo, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, and others from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

After almost a one-hour flight to Puerto Vallarta, we landed and I got to the hotel in time to watch Spain’s match in the quarterfinal of the World Cup. They would be the champions when the tournament ended and as I end this reflection, I’m looking in my lap at my lanyard from Spain. Occasionally, when I travel, I wear my lanyard like when I was younger and used to always wear something of Arizona State University. I do not know if someday I’m going to live in Spain but I have a strong connection to the country. This lanyard represents more than one thing that I wear. It represents my dreams and successes of this period of my life.

I’m Ready
Now, as I travel to Chicago through Phoenix, I’m starting the next period of my life. Today, eleven years from the time when I drove to Chicago with my dear friend, Chris, to start my life after college, I’m returning to Chicago to celebrate the next period of my life. In these eleven years, I have accomplished much, including becoming a pilot, starting a business, learning two languages, publishing two books, traveling the world, and growing friendships that I hope will last for a lifetime.

I’m ready for more and so today begins the first day of the rest of my life.
