Me Gustaría Inventar un País Contigo

“Me gustaría inventar un país contigo…” son las primeras palabras de uno de mis canciones españolas favoritas y la visión que esta canción crea en mi es exactamente lo que pasó durante el año pasado. Hace aproximadamente un año y medio, conocí Kaitlyn y después de dos horas hablando con ella, yo sabía que ella era especial. Sabía que yo quería llevarla a muchos lugares que yo había ido y/o había soñado durante mis días solteros. Pues durante los nuevos primeros meses juntos, Kaitlyn y yo fuimos en muchos viajes incluyendo dos vuelos de sorpresa (a Napa y Sacramento para visitar bodegas de vino), dos otros viajes de catas a Healdsburg y San Luis Obispo, y también viajes a San Diego y Guadalajara, MX.  Aún, con tres meses quedan en nuestro primer año, todavía teníamos tres viajes mas para hacer…y cada uno tenía un giro ligeramente distinto.

Las Vegas – 11-13 Junio

Me encantaría que nuestro país tuviera

un arsenal inmenso de caricias bajo el mar

para que al caer la noche yo encienda dos velas

para invadirte por sorpresa en la intimidad.

Después de nuestro viaje a Healdsburg en Octubre 2010, Kaitlyn y yo hablamos de planear un viaje a Las Vegas para divertirnos en un hotel durante alguna semana. Ella tenía un paquete de descuento y dado que ella fue a Vegas casi cada mes por una fiesta de despedida de soltera, solamente parecía apropiado que ella y yo nos disfrutaríamos en Vegas uno de estos días. Entonces, fuimos a Las Vegas en Junio (11-13)…tres semanas antes de mi ultimo día a Stanford. Nos quedamos al Bellagio en un suite con vistas maravillosas y usamos cada oportunidad para disfrutar las vistas con un vaso de vino.

Nuestro tiempo a Vegas fue distinto que lo demás porque Vegas en el verano tiene mucho calor y también, ella y yo habíamos ido a Vegas muchas veces. Pero lo único tipo de viaje que ella y yo no tuvimos en Vegas era un viaje romántico. Por esa razón, no hicimos mucho en Vegas afuera de tomar vino a cada oportunidad, cenar al Bellagio, bailar por un hora a un club (Tao) y descansar casi un medio del día a la piscina.

Después de una cena muy buena a la casa de bistec al Bellagio, fuimos a un café para disfrutar el famoso espectáculo de agua al Bellagio. Fue un momento especial porque, vimos el espectáculo de agua frente del Torre Eiffel de Paris (Las Vegas). Pueda ser fuera una premonición para nosotros, porque algún día quería llevarla a Paris (France) por su primera vez. Dado que el resto de viaje de veras fue romántico, voy a dejar el resto de los detalles a nuestras memorias, pero el canción lo dice bien: “Me encantaría que nuestro país tuviera un arsenal inmenso de caricias bajo el mar para que al caer la noche yo encienda dos velas para invadirte por sorpresa en la intimidad.” 🙂

Chicago – 2-7 Julio

Y que limite al este con mil amigos,

al sur con tus pasiones y al oeste con el mar.

Cada año desde que he estado en California, me ha gustado ir a Chicago durante el verano (dado que el invierno es mucha de la razón porque me fui). Pues este año, quería ir a Chicago a este punto exactamente porque fue una celebración de mi despedida de Stanford y el principio de mi futuro como una entrepreneur. Cuando salí Chicago en 2004, salí con la idea que me pondría un entrepreneur algún día. El sueño fue que por el tiempo que yo cumplió 30 años, yo empezaría un negocio (pero cual tipo de negocio…no sabía exactamente). Pues, cuando tenía 28 años empecé un negocio al lado como un consultor por el negocio de mi compañero de casa a la universidad (Felipe). El necesitaba ayuda por su sitio de web y fue la oportunidad perfecta para crear mi propio negocio. Usé esta experiencia y la experiencia a mi trabajo para ponerme listo por mi futuro, así que cuando la vida y mis sueños empezaron a llamarme este año en Febrero a salir a mi trabajo….yo estaba listo.

Solamente tuvimos 5 días en Chicago y para mi fue tres viajes en uno. Fue un viaje para ver mi familia y mis amigos, un viaje para hacer mi examen de pilotos cada dos años con mi papa (en el mismo fin de semana de mi “pilotversary“), y también fue el primer viaje por Kaitlyn a Chicago. Así si puede entender como el viaje fue muy rápido y ocupado para mi, pero como siempre tuve todo organizado en mi mente. Pero había algo también muy especial con la manera en que el viaje pasó porque durante el año que Kaitlyn y yo juntábamos he aprendido (y agradecido) como ella podría ir con el corriente por lo tanto teníamos tiempo para disfrutar las cositas de la cuidad y nosotros propios. En nuestra primera noche en la cuidad fuimos a Signature Lounge en el edificio de John Hancock por un trago casi 1000 pies arriba la cuidad alrededor de la medianoche. Fue un buena manera de empezar nuestra semana loca en Chicago.

Después la primera noche el resto del viaje ocurrió muy rápido. Gracias a Dios que todos en Chicago entienden que cuando viajo a Chicago mi horario es loco pero todos hacen tiempo para verme aunque sea por solamente uno o dos horas. En menos de una semana podía ver mi mama y mi sobrino por una tarde caminando alrededor del centro de Chicago, hacer mi vuelo de examen y desayunar con mi papa, ver mis amigos quienes son mi familia (Brian y Kiowa), pasar una tarde en la playa de Oak Street con mi amigo Kurt, y pasar tiempo con amigos de Kaitlyn en el parque que Grant por el “Taste of Chicago.” Y aun, Kaitlyn y yo todavía encontramos tiempo para disfrutar la cuidad como turísticos dado que fue su primera vez en Chicago. Pero viajando con ella es muy fácil – solamente necesitamos tener cenas románticas, horas de alegre tomando vino, y noches caminando por las calles de la cuidad.

Vancouver: 17-20 Agosto

Con dos habitantes será el más pequeño del mundo

y sin embargo el más grande de todos los que yo vi.

Muy corto después de nuestro viaje a Chicago, tomé un viaje muy corto a Colorado en el medio de Julio para visitar mi amigo, Russ, y su familia.

Como siempre mis viajes a Colorado me hicieron pensar de nuevas cosas y como quiero construir mi vida.Por casi 8 años, Russ ha sido un entrepreneur y a lo largo los años he aprendido mucho de el para ponerme listo por mi independencia. Las lecciones que aprendí durante este rápido viaje me ayudarían entender como mis viajes cambiarían en el futuro si mi sueño de tener mi propio negocio como un consultor se puso una realidad.

El viaje a Vancouver por Kaitlyn y yo fue una celebración de nuestro primer año. Desde el día que le conocí, yo sabía que yo quería llevarla a Vancouver y entonces fue maravilloso que al fin de nuestro primer año, yo podría llevarla a uno de mis ciudades favoritos. Vancouver es increíble en el verano y no creo que vimos un nube durante todos los cuatros días allá. Como nuestro viaje en Chicago empezó, nuestro primer orden de negocio fue un vaso de vino para darnos bienvenidos a Vancouver (nuestro hotel tuvo un hora de vino cada tarde para hacer lo mismo a sus visitantes).

De nuevo, dado que tuvimos solamente tres días en la cuidad, planeé todo en mi mente y todo ocurrió perfectamente. La primera noche caminamos de nuestro hotel (en el medio de centro) afuera a la playa de “Third Street” para disfrutar uno de las muchas puestas del sol que vimos durante nuestro tiempo allá. La próxima día fuimos a parque de Capilano para ver el bosque pluvial y hacer una caminata en el bosque. La bonita cosa de nuestros viajes es que nos gusta estar ocupado, afuera, y explorando las cosas de otros lugares. Pero también nos gusta hacerlo en maneras simples. Se hace muy fácil para planear y disfrutar nuestro rápido tiempo juntos.

El viernes, nuestro ultimo día lleno en el viaje, fue muy ocupado pero también muy divertido. Alquilamos bicicletas y fuimos alrededor todo la isla de Vancouver, parándonos brevemente a un restaurante que Russ me recomendó, se llama Meat & Bread. Ayé, los sándwiches fueron del cielo. Después de nuestro día afuera en la cuidad, nos disfrutamos la noche celebrando nuestro aniversario arriba la cuidad.  Le dí la sorpresa de cenar en el tejado del Empire Hotel casi 40 pisos arriba la cuidad en un restaurante con un piso que revuelve 360 grados cada 90 minutos. Allá miramos a una puesta del sol al mismo tiempo que le dí su otro regalo de sorpresa (un álbum de recortes de nuestros viajes en el primer año envuelto para regalo en una mapa para pilotos que significó como nuestro viajes empezaron el año pasado con un vuelo de sorpresa a Napa).

Un Preludio de lo que Esta Porvenir

Que nuestra patria existe donde estemos tú y yo,

que todo estará cerca si cerca estamos los dos.

Sería muy difícil para escribir todas las cosas que Kaitlyn y yo hemos hecho en nuestro primer año juntos, pero si sea cualquier indicación de lo que esta porvenir en nuestras vidas, tengo muchas ganas de disfrutar el futuro. Como la canción dice, cuando estemos, ella y yo, todo esta cerca. En un año el mundo se puso mas pequeño por nosotros con viajes a México y Vancouver, y sueños de ir a Asia, America del Sur, y Europa. Ahora, como escribo este puesto estamos dos semanas de irnos a nuestro próximo viaje – pasando el Año Nuevo en Madrid y tres días en Barcelona y tres días en Paris. Nunca he pensado que en tal corto tiempo podríamos ir a todos estos lugares, pero de alguna manera lo hacemos posible. Con nuestros viajes a Las Vegas, Chicago, y Vancouver, no había una manera mejor para terminar nuestro primer año. Y ahora con una noche en Madrid por el ultimo día del año y la primera semana del año en Barcelona y Paris, no hay una manera mejor para terminar y empezar el año.

En Inglés: I’d Like to Invent a Country with You

“Me gustaría inventar un país contigo…” are the first words of one of my favorite Spanish songs and the vision that this song creates in me is exactly what happened during the last year. About a year and a half ago, I met Kaitlyn and after two hours talking with her, I knew she was special. I knew I wanted to take her to a lot of places that I had gone and/or had dreamed of during my single days. For the first nine months together, Kaitlyn and I went on many trips including two surprise flights (to Sacramento and Napa to visit wineries), two other wine tasting trips to Healdsburg and San Luis Obispo, and also traveled to San Diego and Guadalajara, MX. Though with three months left in our first year, we still had three more trips to do … and each one had a slightly different twist.

Las Vegas – June 11 to 13

I would love that our country have

an immense arsenal of (gentle) caresses under the sea

so that by nightfall I light two candles

to invade you by surprise in the intimacy.

After our trip to Healdsburg in October 2010, Kaitlyn and I talked about planning a trip to Las Vegas to enjoy ourselves during some week. She had a discount package and since she went to Vegas almost every month for a bachelorette party, it only seemed appropriate that she and I would enjoy ourselves in Vegas one of these days. So, we went to Las Vegas in June (11-13) … three weeks before my last day at Stanford. We stayed in a suite at the Bellagio with wonderful views and used every opportunity to enjoy the views with a glass of wine.

Our time in Vegas was different then others because Vegas in the summer is too hot and she and I had gone to Vegas many times. But the only kind of trip she and I hadn’t had in Vegas was a romantic one. For that reason, we didn’t a lot in Vegas outside of taking every opportunity to drink wine, dine at the Bellagio, dance for an hour a club (Tao) and relax almost half of the day at the pool.

After a very good dinner at the steak house at Bellagio, we went to a cafe to enjoy the famous water show at Bellagio. It was a special moment because we saw the water show in front of the Eiffel Tower of the Paris Hotel (Las Vegas). Maybe it was a premonition for us because someday I would like to take her Paris (France) for her first time. Since the rest of trip was really romantic, I’ll leave the rest of the details to our memories, but the song says it well: “I would love that our country have an immense arsenal of (gentle) caresses under the sea, so that by nightfall I light two candles to invade you by surprise in the intimacy.” 🙂

Chicago – July 2 to 7

And that limits to the east with a thousand friends,

to the south with your passions and to west with the sea.

Every year since I’ve been in California, I’ve enjoyed going to Chicago during the summer (since winter is a lot of the reason why I left). Well this year, I wanted to go to Chicago at this point exactly because it was a celebration of my departure from Stanford and the beginning of my future as an entrepreneur. When I left Chicago in 2004, I left with the idea that someday I’d become an entrepreneur. The dream was that by the time I turned 30, I would start a business (but what kind of business…I did not know exactly). Well, when I turned 28 years old I started a business as a consultant for my college roommate’s (Philipp) business. He needed help for their website and it was the perfect opportunity to create my own business. I used this experience and my work experience to ready myself for my future, so when life and my dreams began to call me in February of this year to leave my job…I was ready.

We only had 5 days in Chicago and for me it was three trips in one. It was a trip to see my family and friends, a trip to do my biennial pilot review with my dad (in the same weekend of my “pilotversary“), and it also was Kaitlyn’s first trip to Chicago. So one can understand how the trip was very fast and busy for me, but as always I had everything organized in my mind. Yet there was also something special with how the trip went because during the year Kaitlyn and I have been together I’ve learned (and appreciated) how she could go with the flow as long as we had time to enjoy the little things about the city and ourselves. On our first night in the city we went to Signature Lounge at the John Hancock building for a drink nearly 1000 feet above the city around midnight. It was a good way to start our week crazy in Chicago.

After the first night the rest of trip happened very quickly. Thank God everyone in Chicago understands that when I travel to Chicago my schedule is crazy but they all make time to see me even for just one or two hours. In less than a week was able see my mom and my nephew for an afternoon walking around downtown Chicago, complete my flight review and have breakfast with my dad, see my friends who are my family (Brian and Kiowa), spend an afternoon in Oak Street beach with my friend Kurt, and spend time with Kaitlyn’s friends in Grant Park for the “Taste of Chicago.” And yet, Kaitlyn and I still found time to enjoy the city like tourists since it was her first time in Chicago. But traveling with her is very easy; we just need to have romantic dinners, happy hours drinking wine, and nights walking the streets of the city.

Vancouver: August 17 to 20

“With two people will be the world’s smallest

and yet the greatest of all I saw. ”

Very shortly after our trip to Chicago, I took a short trip to Colorado in the middle of July to visit my friend, Russ, and his family. As always my trips to Colorado made me think of new things and how I want to construct my life. For nearly 8 years, Russ has been an entrepreneur and through the years I’ve learned a lot from him to get myself ready for my independence. The lessons I learned during this quick trip would help me understand how my trips would change in the future if my dream of having my own business as a consultant became a reality.

The trip to Vancouver for Kaitlyn and I was a celebration of our first year. From the day I met her, I knew I wanted to take her to Vancouver and so it was wonderful that at the end of our first year, I was able to take her one of my favorite cities. Vancouver is amazing in the summer and I don’t think we saw a cloud during all four days there. Like our trip began in Chicago, our first order of business was a glass of wine to welcome ourselves to Vancouver (our hotel had a wine hour each evening to do the same for its visitors).

Again, since we had only three days in the city, I planned everything in my mind and everything went perfectly. The first night we walked from our hotel (in the middle of downtown) out to Third Street Beach to enjoy one of the many sunsets we saw during our time there. The next day we went to Capilano Park to see the rainforest and hike in the woods. The nice thing about our trips is that we both like be busy, out, and exploring things of other places. But we also like to do it in simple ways. It makes it easy to plan and enjoy our time fast together.

Friday, our last full day on the trip, was very busy but also very fun. We rented bikes and went around all of Vancouver Island, stopping briefly at a restaurant that Russ recommended to me, called Meat & Bread. Man, the sandwiches heavenly. After our day out in the city, we enjoyed the evening celebrating our anniversary above the city. I gave her the surprise of dining on the roof of the Empire Hotel nearly 40 stories above the city in a restaurant with a floor that revolves 360 degrees every 90 minutes. There we looked at a sunset while I gave her other surprise gift (a scrapbook of our trips in the first year gift-wrapped in a map for pilots that signified how our trips began last year with a surprise flight to Napa).

A Prelude of Things to Come

May our country exists where we you and I,

everything will be close if we are near them.

It would be very difficult to write all that Kaitlyn and I have done in our first year together, but if it’s any indication of things to come in our lives, I’m really looking forward to the future. Like the song says, when we are together, everything is close. In a year the world got smaller for us with trips to Mexico and Vancouver, and dreams of going to Asia, South America and Europe. Now, as I write this post we are two weeks from going to our next trip – spending New Year Eve’s in Madrid and three days in Barcelona and three days in Paris. I never thought that in such a short time we could go to all these places, but somehow we made it possible. With our trips to Las Vegas, Chicago and Vancouver, there was a better way to end our first year. And now with one night in Madrid for the last day of the year and the first week of the year in Barcelona and Paris, there is no better way to finish and start the year.

May our country exists where we you and I,

that all will not think about let’s go.
